Weekly Updates - April 17, 2017

Good evening,

I hope that your family has been able to enjoy the Spring Break and I hope that you have a blessed Easter.

There are some opportunities for EOG preparation coming up in May that I hope you will consider for your child. I will be offering EOG boot camp on all of the Saturdays in May. Each student will receive an invitation this week (probably Tuesday) to EOG Boot Camp. I have attached a copy of the permission slip to this email. The permission slip uses Microsoft Publisher, so if you do not have Publisher installed on your computer you will not be able to open it. It is very important that if you want your child to attend that you return the permission slip, so that I can prepare materials for the correct number of students.

We also have a field trip on Tuesday, April 18 to Coastal Community College. If you signed up as a chaperone you can follow the bus or meet us at the college. The buses will be leaving CFIE at 8:30 a.m. and we plan to arrive at Coastal around 9:00 a.m. The buses will be going to the back parking lot (usually parking lot N6). Weekly Update - October 31, 2016

Good morning,

I hope you and your family are enjoying the cooler Fall temperatures. I love the Autumn weather and changing leaves! Last week was a fast paced week that saw some great Red Ribbon Week support and lots of nonperishable foods donated. Thank you to everyone who donated food! The week ahead promises to be busy and exciting as well.

Please note that fourth grade does not have a Halloween Party. We will have business as usual tomorrow. I did trim the homework down to just math, but that is the only modification I have made for tomorrow's schedule.

Also we have a field trip on Tuesday to the Onslow County Museum. I can only have two chaperones on the bus for each field trip. I have selected Mr. Fallavollita and Mr. Larose to ride the bus with us this time. I will chose different bus riding chaperones each time. However, that doe not mean you cannot go, if you still want. Other parents can still go, but you will need to follow the bus with your own vehicle or meet us at the museum at 9:00 a.m. If you are riding or following the bus please be at the school at 8:15 a.m. If you are not fingerprinted and completely processed by Onslow county Schools you can also go, but you cannot be left alone with any students except your own. We will leave the museum by 11:30 and return back to the school before our regular lunch time, so students do not need to do anything special for lunch. We will not be having a snack on Tuesday, so students should eat a big breakfast. One more thing parents must pay $2.14 at the door of the museum and they do not except debit or credit cards.

Important dates:

Monday, October 31 - End of the first nine weeks

Tuesday, November 1 - Field trip to Onslow County Museum

Thursday, November 3 - Mrs. Clark will go to Raleigh with the school team to accept our Global Designation Award. There will be a substitute teacher in the classroom.

Monday, November 7 - Mrs. Clark will be at Swansboro Middle School presenting professional development on reading. There will be a substitute teacher in the classroom.

Wednesday, November 9 - Awards Ceremony in multipurpose room at 8:30 for Honor Roll, Principal's List, and AVID award

Thursday, November 10 - Early release for students

Friday, November 11 - No School Veteran's Day

I apologize for the Reading Eggspress trouble this past week and I have put in a back up Study Island assignments in case it does not work this week. Students MUST be doing there math every night. There is not excuse for not doing the math. If they do not have math homework it will be listed on the homework sheet or I will send out an email. If your child loses the homework sheet it can be found on the school website under staff, Tammy Clark and homework.

Thank you to the parents who have come in for our parent teacher conference. There are many scheduled this week. If you have an emergency and cannot make it in please email me or call the school and leave a message. I can reschedule the conference and would much rather reschedule than be sitting in the classroom wondering where you are.

Below are some things that are happening in the next two weeks. Thank you for all that you do to help your child succeed!

Weekly Updates - October 11, 2016

Good afternoon,

I hope this email finds you safe and sound after Hurricane Matthew has made its way out of our town.  I have attached the updated homework schedule.  I just moved everything over one day.  I am making the assumption that there will be school tomorrow, but if that should change I will let you know (having Internet back is a wonderful thing).  We are going on a field trip on November 1st.  I have attached that permission slip, but the students will bring home a hard copy tomorrow.  Below are some upcoming events for this week.
As always thank you for your continued support.
P.S. Trash creation starts next week!!  I have 3-4 volunteers, but if you are interested let me know. It is not too late.
-Conferences start this week-If yours got cancelled or you have not signed up for one the form to do this will come home tomorrow.
-Friday, October 14- Fall festival --If your child plans to do something at the festival they have to have an adult with them and the adult needs to let me know before the festival by email.  All money raised will go to The Water Project to support a well being built in Africa.

Weekly Updates - October 3 -7, 2016

Good evening,

Welcome to October!  Cooler temperatures make me smile, but the way time flies makes me nervous.  Hopefully, your child has shown you the Interim Report that went home on Thursday.  Please sign it and return it if you have not already.  Benchmarks are finished for the most part and we will discuss them at our upcoming conference.  Thursday, October the 6th is open house and I will have a sign-up sheet out for parents to schedule a time that is convenient for our conference.  If you cannot come to open house, I will send the sign-up sheet home with your child on Friday. Below are some things that are happening in the upcoming weeks.  Thank you and have a wonderful week!

+ Monday, October 3 – Book Fair begins

+ Thursday, October 6 – Open House 5-7 p.m.

+ Friday, October 14 – Fall Festival – I need donations of individually wrapped fortune cookies.  Some of the students are thinking about making things to sell at the Fall Festival to raise money for the Water for Africa campaign.  I know we will do this for the Spring Fling, however if I have a parent who would like to help the students with this idea for the Fall Festival I would be thrilled!

Weekly Updates - September 26, 2016

Good afternoon,

Last week we made history by becoming the first Global Ready Model school in the state of North Carolina. Our class was visited by the evaluation team and your children did an outstanding job showing how globally prepared they are. I was so proud and you should be too! Below are some of the things we have coming up this week. Thank you for your help and support!

1. Monday, September 26 - Laptops will go home if I have received the proper paperwork and the school fees of $31.00. There will not be homework assignment this week on the laptops, but there will be next week. Laptops MUST be charged at home and students need to have working earbuds for many of the county purchased websites we will be using.

2. Federal cards are now called Impact Aids and these cards will go home on Monday. These cards must be returned by each student. I give out treats and Clark Cash to students who return them on Tuesday, September 27.

3. Monday is an enrichment day and students should wear tennis shoes for P.E.

4. Congratulations to Bailey Collins and Audrianna Foster who were selected to participate in the Fall Safety Patrol. They will begin their training Monday during the regular school day.

5. The students voted for their own representatives for the student council and I am happy to announce that Kendall Kellum and Josh Olan will be representing our class on the CFIE student council.

6. Interim Report will go home on Thursday, September 29. I will start scheduling first nine weeks conferences next week.

7. The Go Math chapter 1 test was sent home on Friday. For the most part I was very pleased.

8. The Fall Open House will be on October 6 from 5-7 p.m.

9. There will be a book Fair starting on October 3rd.

10. Quizzes will be administered on the Guided reading books this week. If students have finished the guided reading book they do have my blessing to read other books as long as they are grade appropriate quality literature.

11. Spelling will be different this week. I am concentrating on the rules and spelling patterns. Students will have a nightly homework worksheet and a test that requires them to apply the rule that they should be learning. There is not an assigned list of words, just one rule and the application of that rule.

12. Beginning of the year benchmarks will be done through Study Island this year instead of USA TestPrep. The students will start these benchmarks on Tuesday, September 27. They are required to do them on their laptops. It is very important that they bring they laptops to school every day and that they are charged.

Thanks again and have an awesome week!

Weekly Update - 9/19/16

Good evening.

Thank you to everyone who sent in supplies for our water pumps, sand dams, and rain catchments.  We will be building them this upcoming week.  I am excited to see how they turn out!
PowerSchools is down for maintenance this weekend.  I hope to get grades for the vocabulary/ spelling test, reading grades, math grades, writing grades and social studies grades in Monday morning.  I have them ready to go I am just waiting on PowerSchools to come back up. Students should be showing you their graded papers. Students should be making corrections on all papers.  Any grade that is below a 60 must be signed by a parent or guardian.  It is the student's responsibility to show you the graded work.  It should be in the homework folder.  Once it comes home it does not need to come back unless it is a score below 60. I will start taking 10 point off of every paper without a name on it this week, so please remind your child to put his or her name on his paper.
Laptop paperwork must be returned and the school fees of $31.00 must be paid before students can take the laptop home.  If you were unable to attend the meetings we will be sending home the paperwork this week.  Please remind your child that these laptops are for educational purposes only.  Games have already been found and were being played Friday instead of working on the water pump projects.  This is a good way to lose the privilege of having a laptop.  No student will take home laptops this week, but there is a good possibility that they will go home next week.
We have many things happening this week, so please read the important dates below.  Thank you and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Important Dates
Tuesday, September 20 - math test on chapter 1
Wednesday, September 21 - picture day -  All students will have their picture taken by a professional photographer.  If you do NOT want this to happen please let me know by note or email before Wednesday.Fliers to purchase the photos were sent home last week.  They should be in the agenda or the homework folder if you have not seen them.
Thursday, September 22 - Global designation visit and early release for students-  Students will be dismissed at 12 p.m. Lunch will be provided before dismissal.
Friday, September 23 - Vocabulary and spelling test - Students need to study, especially those tricky vocabulary words.
Thanks again!

Weekly Update -9/12/16

Good Afternoon,

Fourth grade is off to a great start.  The students are working hard and preparing for the rigor of the new school year.  A couple of things that everyone should be aware of are:

1.        Grades have been loaded in PowerSchools for math, word study and science.  Parents who have access to the parent portal can see these grades.  If you do not have access to the parent portal you can get access by filling out the proper form and bringing it to the front office with proper ID.

2.       It is possible that your child’s grades are lower than you want or expect.  Please give your child at least two more weeks to get accustom to me and the fourth grade expectations.  When the first nine weeks interim reports go home (September 29), if your child is still struggling we will have a conference.  I would stress that students must do their nightly homework and must focus during classroom instruction.  A student cannot learn if they cannot focus on what I am saying.  I cannot give good grades to students who do not finish their work in a timely manner.

3.       We have started a water scarcity project in class.  There are many things we will be doing to raise funds to get a well built in Africa to help a village of our fellow human beings have  clean drinkable water.

a.       One thing that we are doing is collecting Capri Sun juice bags.  Mrs. Olan will be using the TerraCycle program to have funds sent to Africa for clean drinking water.

b.      Another thing we will be doing this week is researching water pumps, rain catchment devices and water dams.  Students will be working in groups to develop a pump, rain catchment or dam.  I need some donations for this project.  There is a donation list attached to this email.  If you are able to send in any of these things it will be greatly appreciated.

c.       The students are brainstorming many different ways to raise money to fund a water pump through The Water Project foundations.

4.       Go Math is the math curriculum we use in fourth grade.  It is a rigorous program, but I had excellent results with it last year.  There are days when we will not finish every single problem in class of the lesson.  It is very hard to finish the whole lesson on enrichment days.  I send the lesson home so that students can use it to help them with the homework, but they do not have to complete the lesson if we did not finish it in class.  Students must always do the front of the homework and #1 and #2 on the back.  The rest of the back can be done and will help your child review concepts, but it is not required during the first nine weeks.

5.       A big THANK YOU to Mr. Fallavollita, Mr. Owens and Mrs. Owens for coming out to play kickball with our fourth graders during recess Friday.  You guys rock!!

As always, thank you for your help and support and if you have any questions please feel free to email.
