Dear Parents and Students,

I am please to welcome you to Carolina Forest International Elementary.  I hope you are excited about the upcoming adventures this school year brings.

The Onslow County Gifted program has two parts; identification and service.  Identification is accomplished through testing which identifies a student as having the abilities to undertake a more challenging curriculum. Testing begins with the 3rd Grade. The second part, service, details what programs are available and which are most appropriate for the individual student. The goal is to differentiate the curriculum for every student and to supplement the curriculum for those students who have demonstrate the ability, the motivation, and the willingness to take risks.

Research and experience have shown that the most effective model to ensure understanding and growth, for all students in general, and gifted students in particular, is to differentiate instruction in the everyday classroom. Differentiation takes on many forms from acceleration of the curriculum to offering deeper, tiered and extended activities. Our teachers are experienced, effective and committed to this model. Differentiation in the classroom is the most effective model appropriate to ensure growth and is the recommended model for the majority of identified gifted students.

I will be available for our Annual Review general parents meeting during student orientation in August and during our Open House.  I am also available by request most Mondays or Tuesdays before school starts for individual conferences.

Finally, I wish to thank you in advance for your support and offer our pledge to do our upmost in providing your child with a very challenging and effective learning environment this year.

Chess Team Information

Chess is Life

Summary: The Chess club is an extracurricular activity that meets during lunch.

Purpose: The purpose of the Carolina Forest International Elementary Chess Club is to provide a forum in which chess players of all skill levels can exercise their talents and develop their knowledge of the game and strategic and critical thinking skills.  Participation also promotes good character and sportsmanship.

Tryouts will be concluded for all 3rd-5th grade members of the chess team. Practice will be conducted during lunch through April. It is important to remember that all students who made the chess team will be required to practice and will be competing weekly to be one of the students who will go to the chess tournament in the spring. (2/3 team has five members and 4/5 team has six members).

Chess instruction is given for all 2nd graders during the first nine weeks. We will hold a tryout for 2nd grade students who already know how to play chess and a competition for the students who are currently taking chess instruction in order to find the team members from 2nd grade. Initially I plan to have this concluded by December in order to begin practice for the tournament.

Academic Derby

Summary: Academic Derby is a quiz bowl style competition offered to our Fifth Graders. Elementary Academic Derby features students from ALL Onslow County Elementary Schools.  Students compete against each other in a quiz bowl type setting and answer questions that are based on their age level and draw from the curriculum and from cultural happenings.  The derby play is divided into three seasons lasting throughout the school year.  Students interested should see Mrs. Burdette.
